Harry S. Truman was one tough, plain-spoken president. While he was humble enough to second-guess himself, it never stopped him from making the tough decisions. (And he made a lot of them.) Even when Harry Truman was catapulted from obscurity to President of the United States, he never lost his common man, common sense values. Perhaps this is the reason that the memory of Harry Truman continues to grow in popularity. (He has gone from the lowest public approval rating upon leaving office to one of the most admired presidents of today.)

President Truman's 1950 Christmas Greeting
Harry Truman always told the truth as he saw it and let the chips fall where they may. He knew the buck stopped at his desk, and he never consulted a poll before speaking his mind. Likewise, where Harry Truman's views on Christmas were concerned, he didn't wimp-out like so many politicians and even some Christians do today. Truman clearly and forthrightly expressed what most Americans instinctively knew and believed themselves. In 1950, President Truman sent the following Christmas greeting to his entire White House staff. (Click on the photo below to see a full size image of the Truman Christmas card)

In this card, President Truman made the following statement. "We need Christmas to bring us back to a due sense of spiritual values." How our nation needs to hear this statement from our current Commander-In-Chief!
President Truman's "Crusade Of Prayer" Christmas Address
That same year, in his Christmas radio address to the nation, President Truman summed up the struggle that was then escalating in Korea. In it he said:
"Many of us are fortunate enough to celebrate Christmas by our own fireside. But there are many others who are away from their homes and loved ones on this day. Thousands of our boys are on the cold and dreary battlefield of Korea, But all of us - at home, at war, wherever we may be - are within reach of God's love and power. We all can pray. We all should pray. The nation already is in the midst of a Crusade of Prayer."
"On the last Sunday of the old year, there will be special services devoted to a revival of faith. I call upon all of you to enlist in this common cause. I call upon you no matter what your spiritual allegiance."
"We are all joined in the fight against the tyranny of Communism. Communism is godless. Democracy is the harvest of faith - faith in one's own self, faith in one's neighbors, and faith in God. Democracy's most powerful weapon is not a gun, tank or bomb, it is faith - faith in the brotherhood and dignity of man under God."
President Truman's Last White House Christmas
1952 was President Truman's last and only Christmas in The White House (He always went back to Independence for every other Christmas while The White House was being restored.) As he lit The National Christmas Tree, Truman again requested prayer for the troops, and then made this, his final Christmas prayer request as our President.
"Let us also pray for our enemies. Let us pray that the Spirit of God shall enter their lives and prevail in their lands. Let us pray for a fulfillment of the brotherhood of man. Through Jesus Christ the world will yet be a better and a fairer place. This faith sustains us today as it has sustained mankind for centuries."
